UNICEF dibentuk oleh United Nations General Assembly pada tanggal 11 Desember 1946, untuk menyediakan makanan darurat dan kesehatan untuk anak-anak di negara-negara yang telah hancur oleh Perang Dunia II. Pada tahun 1953, UNICEF menjadi bagian permanen dari Sistem PBB dan namanya disingkat dari aslinya United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. tetapi terus dikenal dengan singkatan populer berdasarkan judul ini sebelumnya.
